Music as Prayer
In life's most sacred moments, music becomes prayer and touches the soul of those who listen
Musicians for church music on the Amalfi Coast
Ravello is called the city of music. In 1880 Richard Wagner visited the gardens of Villa Rufolo and found there the inspiration for the enchanted garden of his Parsifal. Since then, every summer, music returns to the terrace suspended over the sea. If you are looking for musicians for church music for a wedding on the Amalfi Coast, in Ravello or any other town on the coast, Maestro Ilarion, tenor, brings live sacred music to your ceremony.
A bride who loves music
Think of a bride who has played the cello since she was a child. She has spent more summers than she can remember listening to outdoor concerts, and the first time she saw the terrace of Villa Rufolo she thought: here, one day. The groom, who knows nothing about music, learned to love it by listening to her.
For the wedding they choose Ravello Cathedral, on the square a few steps from the villa. It is an ancient church, with bronze doors and a marble pulpit decorated with mosaics, held up by columns resting on lions. She has only one request: the music must be real. No recordings, no effects. Just organ and voice.
The Maestro listens to her ideas, makes suggestions, listens again. Together with the parish priest they build a programme in which every piece has meaning. She chooses the Ave Maria with the expertise of someone who reads music. He chooses the recessional, and she laughs: it is the piece she always played when he came to visit her.
On the wedding day the bride walks in, and for the first time in her life she does not listen to the music as a musician. She does not follow the notes, she does not count the bars. She lets it come. During the Ave Maria she closes her eyes. The groom, beside her, realises it is the greatest gift he could have given her.
Afterwards, the square, the bell tower, and then the walk to the terrace over the sea, with the whole coast at their feet.
The ceremony musicians
- The tenor sings the solo pieces, from the entrance to the Ave Maria.
- The parish organist accompanies the liturgy.
- The choir, if present, joins the congregation's chants.
- The couple take part in the choice: each piece can have meaning for them, within the limits set by the parish priest.

What this story teaches
Those who make music for a living rarely manage to listen without analysing. The wedding day is one of the few when you can afford to let go.
Sacred music does not ask to be understood: it asks to be welcomed. And it is exactly when you stop controlling that it reaches deepest.
